SEO in Melbourne in 2026 typically costs AUD $1,500–$5,000+ per month for a real campaign. Local work can start lower. Retainers under about $800 a month are usually wasted in competitive niches — trades, medical, legal, ecommerce, and anything targeting the CBD. Here’s what those numbers actually buy.
TL;DR
- Reputable Melbourne SEO retainers typically sit at AUD $1,500–$5,000+ per month — our published band, and what a serious campaign costs to run.
- Typical 2026 Melbourne market figures (not our packages): GBP-only ~$400–$800; basic local ~$800–$1,500; full small-business ~$1,500–$3,000; competitive mid-market ~$3,000–$5,000; ecommerce ~$5,000–$10,000; enterprise $10,000+.
- Under ~$800/month rarely works in competitive Melbourne verticals. It buys a listing tidy-up, not a campaign.
- Initial movement in 3–6 months; substantial results in competitive markets in 6–12 months. Nobody honest guarantees #1.
- We quote custom work, in-house from Docklands — not packages or offshore hours with a Melbourne logo.
2026 Melbourne SEO pricing
Typical 2026 Melbourne market figures from Australian agency guides — not our packages. We don’t sell silver/gold/platinum. We quote the work your site and market need, usually inside our published range of $1,500–$5,000+ per month.
| Campaign type | Typical monthly cost (AUD, 2026) | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile only | $400–$800 | One location that already ranks; listing, photos and reviews only |
| Basic local SEO | $800–$1,500 | One suburb or service area, lighter competition — garden, neighbourhood retail |
| Full small-business campaign | $1,500–$3,000 | Most Melbourne SMEs: local medical, air conditioning, gyms, wholesale with a local footprint |
| Competitive mid-market | $3,000–$5,000 | Real estate, healthcare, inner-city retail, crowded categories across multiple suburbs |
| Ecommerce / aggressive growth | $5,000–$10,000 | Catalogues, national ecommerce, gym equipment, audio, hundreds of SKUs |
| Enterprise / national | $10,000+ | Multi-brand, multi-state, heavy content and technical programmes |
A proper manual audit is typically $1,000–$3,000. Reputable Australian agencies charge about $150–$300 an hour. Hourly fits a scoped fix. It does not replace a campaign.
What you actually get at each price point
$300–$800: listing maintenance, not a campaign
You’re buying a Google Business Profile tidy-up, a few directory listings, and a PDF that looks like a report. Strategy, content and technical work are almost never in the room.
It can limp along for a café in a quiet outer suburb. It fails in the CBD, and it fails for trades, medical, legal and ecommerce — crowded queries, bigger sites, and Google already has “good enough” results. A $500 retainer does not buy the content or technical cleanup those rankings need.
This is also where overseas $10–$50/hour work gets resold as a Melbourne package. Australian English, NAP consistency and suburb-level intent don’t survive that model. Under ~$800 a month in a competitive Melbourne vertical is usually wasted.
$800–$1,500: basic local SEO
The floor for a genuine local effort: a technical pass, Google Business Profile optimisation, citation cleanup, a modest keyword set, and on-page work on pages you already have. You might get a little content. You will not get a content engine, ecommerce architecture, or the technical SEO that fixes INP on a heavy WordPress or Shopify build.
It can work for one location and one or two suburbs — garden supplies in Brunswick, a neighbourhood retailer — if the site is already healthy. Stretch it across metro Melbourne, or into real estate and medical, and the hours run out.
$1,500–$3,000: a full small-business campaign
This is where most Melbourne businesses that actually want growth need to sit, and the bottom of our published retainer range.
A month should include technical monitoring, a real keyword and page strategy, service or category pages, local content (suburb pages done properly, not spun), Google Business Profile as a channel rather than a set-and-forget listing, and reporting tied to enquiries — not vanity rankings.
This is the band for air conditioning covering the inner west and north, medical clinics, gyms, garden and wholesale that sell locally, and retailers who need Maps and organic. If we quote you here, it’s because the hours can compete in your SERP, not because a package said so.
$3,000–$5,000: competitive mid-market
Inner Melbourne is dense. Ranking a real estate office in South Yarra, or healthcare across multiple suburbs, is a different job to ranking one shopfront in a quieter pocket. You’re paying for more content, tighter technical work, and enough authority that Google has a reason to trust you over incumbents. Ecommerce starts eating hours here too: faceted navigation, product copy, Merchant Centre, crawl budget on Shopify or WooCommerce.
$5,000+: ecommerce and aggressive growth
Large catalogues and national product terms need a team. Content, digital PR, conversion work and technical SEO run together. Gym equipment, audio retail and national wholesale sit here more often than people expect — national search, commercial SERPs, and a pretty homepage does not rank a thousand SKUs. If someone quotes $1,200 a month on a serious store, ask what they are not doing.
What changed in 2026
The retainer number hasn’t leapt. The work inside it has.
AI Overviews and GEO. A chunk of informational queries now get an AI summary before the blue links. Being the source that gets cited is a different job to stuffing a blog with “what is” posts. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) means structured, specific, first-hand content a model can quote without guessing. Thin AI copy is easy to ignore. We unpacked which queries still convert in Is SEO Dead in 2026? What the Data Really Shows.
INP is the technical gatekeeper. Fast paint isn’t enough. Interaction to Next Paint measures whether the site responds when someone taps a menu, filter or add-to-cart. A pretty theme that stutters on mobile loses to a lighter competitor. That’s core technical SEO for us — especially WordPress and Shopify builds loaded with plugins and app bloat.
Content has to earn the citation. Suburb pages that swap a place name into the same three paragraphs don’t hold. Service pages need real expertise, local proof, and markup that tells Google who you are, where you work, and what you sell. Slower than a content mill. It lasts. That’s the edge: developers and SEOs in the same Docklands office, not a strategy deck emailed offshore.
What drives the quote
Competition. “Air conditioning Melbourne” is a brawl. “Air conditioning Thornbury” is a fight you can win on a modest retainer. Real estate, medical and inner-city retail cost more because incumbents already spend. Garden, equine and some wholesale niches move faster if the site isn’t a mess.
The site you have today. A clean WordPress or Shopify build is cheaper to grow than a slow, duplicated, plugin-heavy site. If INP is poor or every URL has four versions, the first months are repair. Sometimes the honest call is to fix or rebuild first — we build WordPress and Shopify sites for that reason.
Ecommerce vs local service. An air-con installer needs Google Business Profile, service pages, and a few location pages. A catalogue with hundreds of SKUs needs information architecture, product SEO, Merchant Centre, and content that can rank generic terms, not just brands.
Content and geography. Three services and one location is a finite list. National ecommerce, or suburb coverage from Footscray to Frankston, never really stops. Ranking in Brunswick or Docklands is not the same job as ranking “Melbourne”. National gym equipment, audio or wholesale is another step again. We’d rather win the suburbs you actually cover than spray “Melbourne” on every title tag and lose.
Where you start. A new domain takes longer. Junk backlinks from a previous “SEO package” take cleanup. Neither is a reason to skip SEO. Both change the first-quarter scope.
We’ve worked across retail, real estate, ecommerce, gyms and gym equipment, audio, horse racing and equine, medical and healthcare, garden, air conditioning and wholesale. Competitive in the CBD and inner suburbs? Budget mid-market. Single-location with a tidy site? A full small-business campaign is the conversation.
How to tell if the spend will pay back
Ignore ranking screenshots. Do this on a whiteboard.
- What is one new customer worth over 12 months — not the first invoice, the relationship?
- Divide monthly SEO spend by that number. That’s how many extra customers you need to break even.
- Compare it to what you already pay per lead in Google Ads. Organic is slower to start and cheaper to keep.
Illustration — not a client. Say you’re a Melbourne air-conditioning company. Average install $3,500. SEO retainer $2,000 a month. You need well under one extra job a month for the campaign to pay for itself. If by month nine organic is sending a handful of installs a month, you’re ahead — and those pages keep working when you pause ads. Your numbers will differ. The arithmetic shouldn’t.
Ecommerce uses the same shape with different units: average order value × repeat rate. Local services count jobs. Clinics count bookings. If you cannot name the unit, you’re not ready to buy SEO.
We’ve published outcomes we’ll stand behind, without inflating them:
- NC Fitness Gear: we fixed technical SEO issues and tightened Google Ads. Bounce rate went from over 50% to under 3%. They now rank in top positions in Australia for gym equipment phrases.
- Sight and Sound Galleria: Google Merchant plus SEO. Conversion increased 1400% in 12 months, with first-page rankings including top-three for generic, hard-to-target phrases.
- Kollab: from one ranking page to 450+ first-page results, with organic traffic growing over 100% yearly.
Gym equipment, audio and ecommerce — not a promise your site will match them. Results depend on the site, the market and the time you give the work. We don’t guarantee #1. For Maps and suburb pages, see our local SEO guide for Australian businesses.
Red flags
Guaranteed #1 rankings. Google does not sell positions to agencies. Anyone who promises a #1 spot is naïve or selling a story. No reputable Melbourne SEO firm controls the algorithm. We don’t, and we won’t pretend to.
Overseas $10–$50/hour with no Australian English. Cheap hours get resold as local retainers. You get spun suburb pages, broken NAP, and copy that doesn’t sound like a business in Richmond or Camberwell.
Fixed backlink quotas. “20 links a month” is a production target, not a strategy. A handful of relevant Australian mentions beat a spreadsheet of junk.
12-month lock-ins with no reporting. SEO takes time. That is not a reason to sign a year of silence. You should see what was done, what moved, and what’s next — every month.
Templated packages with a set number of blogs and “optimisations” are the same warning. Cookie-cutter scopes fit the agency’s product sheet. They rarely fit your competitors.
Design Box approach
We’re Design Box Digital — Melbourne, in-house, Level 10, 611 Flinders Street, Docklands. We don’t subcontract your SEO offshore. The people who quote the work can change the templates, the schema and the content.
We do SEO, Google Ads, WordPress and Shopify web design, social ads, ecommerce SEO, technical SEO (including INP), and AI-ready / GEO content. Ranking a site that can’t convert, or advertising a site Google can’t crawl, is how budgets disappear.
Custom, not packages. Reputable Melbourne SEO retainers typically run $1,500–$5,000+ per month. That’s our published range. A clinic in Brighton is not a national gym-equipment catalogue.
Technical + content + local. Crawl, speed, INP, structured data; content that can be cited; Google Business Profile, NAP and suburb intent. Dropping one of those three is how campaigns stall at month four.
No #1 guarantee. We’ll tell you if the site isn’t ready, if the budget won’t touch the SERP, or if paid search should carry the next quarter while organic is built.
Initial movement typically shows in 3–6 months. Substantial results in competitive Melbourne markets take 6–12 months. Leads this week is Google Ads alongside SEO — not a reason to skip organic.
FAQ
Is $500 a month worth it for SEO in Melbourne?
Almost never in a competitive category. $500 might keep a Google Business Profile alive for a low-competition, single-suburb business. In the CBD, medical, legal, metro-scale trades or ecommerce, it does not buy a campaign.
Should I buy a retainer or a one-off project?
A one-off audit ($1,000–$3,000 is typical) is a diagnosis. Rankings are built and defended with ongoing work. Treat a one-off as the start; a retainer as the campaign. Hourly ($150–$300) fits discrete consulting, not 12 months of growth.
How long until SEO works?
Our published timeline: initial movement in 3–6 months; substantial results in competitive Melbourne markets in 6–12 months. Faster claims usually mean ranking for your own brand name. Ecommerce catalogues and new domains sit toward the long end.
SEO vs Google Ads — which should I pay for?
Different jobs. Ads can put you on page one tomorrow; you pay for every click, and it stops when the budget does. SEO is slower and compounds. Most Melbourne businesses that care about pipeline run both. We run both in-house, so they shouldn’t bid against each other.
Do I need a new website first?
Not always. You do if the site is slow, broken on mobile, unindexable, or so poorly structured that new content has nowhere useful to live. A $3,000/month retainer on a theme that fails INP is how you pay for content nobody sees. We’ll say so. If a rebuild is the bottleneck, our web design is WordPress and Shopify, built so SEO isn’t a retrofit.
Can you guarantee we’ll be #1?
No. Anyone who does is a red flag. We guarantee the way we work: in-house, ethical, reported, aimed at traffic, leads and sales rather than a rank-tracker screenshot.
