Is It Time to Redesign Your Website? A 2026 Checklist for Australian Businesses
Most “10 signs you need a redesign” posts are written for a UK audience and stop at “it looks old.” If you are an Australian business trying to decide when to redesign your website, that is not a brief. The useful question is whether to patch, refresh, or rebuild — and whether the new site can still rank after the URLs move.
We are Design Box Digital in Docklands. Same in-house team for web design and technical SEO. We only build custom WordPress and Shopify. We refuse Wix and Squarespace. This is how we decide with you — not a listicle, and not a #1 ranking guarantee.
TL;DR
- Do not redesign because a UK post said your hero is “boxy.” Decide patch, refresh, or full rebuild.
- 2026 warning signs we actually act on: failing INP / Core Web Vitals, a broken mobile experience, traffic with no enquiries, a CMS you cannot edit, plugin or app debt, and a brand or sitemap that no longer matches the business.
- A redesign that skips 301 redirects and Google Search Console is how Australian sites lose the rankings they paid for. Web development and SEO are the same job.
- Published Melbourne floors: landing from $1,100, business WordPress from $3,300, Shopify or WooCommerce from $7,000. GST is 10%. Details in our website cost guide.
- Leaving Wix or Squarespace is a rebuild, not a theme swap. We will not “customise” a builder.
- SEO retainers typically $1,500–$5,000+/month. They do not rescue a site that cannot take the work. No #1 guarantee.
Patch, refresh, or full rebuild

A paint job on a rotten stack is not a redesign. Neither is throwing out URLs that already rank. Use the table before you write a brief.
| Approach | What it actually is | When it is honest | When it is a waste |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patch | Hosting, updates, image/CDN work, INP fixes on a sound theme, copy and CTA tweaks. Often WordPress maintenance, not a new site. | Core Web Vitals are close. You can edit pages. Brand and services are still true. The URL map should stay. | Abandoned theme, builder lock-in, you cannot log in, Ads are buying bounce. More plugins will not save it. |
| Refresh | New templates and CSS on the same CMS and a preserved URL map. Content audited, not dumped. | Already on WordPress or Shopify. Rankings worth keeping. Brand has moved; architecture has not. | You are changing platform. Every URL is a mess. Plugin debt is the architecture. |
| Full rebuild | New custom WordPress or Shopify. URL inventory, 301 map, Search Console, GA4, forms or checkout rebuilt. | Wix or Squarespace. Dead theme. Services and sitemap do not match. INP cannot be rescued. You cannot edit the site. | The site already ranks and converts and you only want it “prettier.” That is a refresh with a rebuild invoice. |
If two or more rebuild rows apply, stop patching. If only one patch row applies, do not buy a new website to avoid a hosting conversation.
2026 warning signs (the ones that change the brief)
These are the signs your website needs a redesign we use in Melbourne. Looks “a bit 2019” is a symptom. The rows below are the diagnosis.
Interaction to Next Paint — it feels slow, not just “loads slow”
In 2026, “the homepage eventually appeared” is not performance. Google’s Core Web Vitals include Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how long the page takes to respond after someone taps a menu, a form, or Add to cart. A site can pass a pretty screenshot and still jank on a phone. Theme-bloated WordPress and app-heavy Shopify fail this quietly.
Check Search Console (Core Web Vitals / experience) and PageSpeed Insights on the URLs you actually advertise — mobile, not desktop theatre. If INP is red on templates you cannot change, that is a rebuild or a serious theme job, not another slider plugin.
This is not abstract. NC Fitness Gear came to us with a slow WooCommerce store, high bounce and expensive ads. After technical SEO and Ads work, bounce moved from over 50% to under 3%. That work only pays off on a stack that can take it. A $500 template does not.
Mobile is the site
Google indexes mobile-first. If type is tiny, tap targets overlap, the menu is a desktop leftover, or checkout fields spill off-screen, the desktop version is a lie. A five-year-old “mobile-friendly” badge is not a 2026 pass. Test the enquiry path and the cart on an actual phone. If the theme cannot do it without a page-builder pile-on, you are in rebuild territory.
Traffic, ads, or rankings — and no enquiries
A website that people find and then bounce is a brochure. Forms buried in the footer, a phone number as an image, no clear offer, or a lander that does not match the ad: those are conversion problems. Sometimes the fix is copy and layout on the current templates (a refresh). Sometimes the templates cannot hold a lander, tracking is broken, and you are paying Google for clicks that never become a lead.
If you are running Ads onto a slow or unmeasured site, stop buying traffic until the page can take it. We would rather fix INP and GA4 than scale spend into bounce. Kollab is the other end: a site that could take SEO — one ranking page to 450+ first-page results, organic up over 100% year on year. The question is whether your CMS can be that site.
You cannot edit it
If changing a price, a service, or a blog post means emailing a developer who left, you do not own a website. You rent a PDF. Older page builders, locked themes, and “the freelancer has the login” produce stale content. A modern WordPress or Shopify build should let you update pages, products and posts without breaking the header. Get the domain, hosting, CMS admin, Search Console and GA4 into your accounts before anyone designs a mockup.
Plugin debt (or Shopify app debt)
One plugin to fix the last plugin is how WordPress dies. The same pattern exists on Shopify as apps stacked on a theme until INP and checkout both suffer. Monthly maintenance is the right spend when the stack is sound. It is the wrong spend when updates conflict every month, security plugins fight each other, or the care bill is approaching what a clean build costs.
Typical Melbourne market for WordPress maintenance is often $50–$300/month. That band keeps software from rotting. It does not replace a theme Google will not rank. If your developer’s answer to every problem is “we’ll add a plugin,” you are funding the next rebuild.
Brand drift — the site is a previous company
New logo, new services, new suburbs, new wholesale offer — same 2019 sitemap. Customers land on pages that describe a business you no longer run. That is not a CSS refresh. It is an information-architecture job: which URLs stay, which merge, which 301 to a page that is true.
SEO-safe redesign (or you will pay twice)
Redesigns are a common way to lose organic traffic in Australia. The cause is almost never “Google hates new design.” It is 404s, dropped titles, and a Search Console property nobody checked.
Before anyone opens Figma:
- Inventory live URLs. Crawl the site. Export what Google has indexed from Search Console. Note the pages that bring enquiry or revenue, not just the ones you like.
- Map every URL. Same URL, 301 to a new URL, or 301 into a merged page. No “we’ll redirect the homepage and see.” Orphan the rest and you donate rankings to competitors.
- Do not change URLs for sport. Pretty slugs are not a strategy. If
/plumbing-brunswick/already ranks, keep it unless there is a real reason. - Search Console and GA4 in your Google account. We set GSC up on business and ecommerce packages. You should own the property. An agency login you lose when you leave is not analytics.
- 301s on the server (or Shopify’s redirect list), tested. Launch week: crawl for 404s, submit the new sitemap, watch coverage. Fix the misses immediately.
- Titles, H1s and internal links are a migration, not a surprise. High-value pages keep their job unless you are deliberately consolidating.
This is why web development and SEO belong in one team. A design studio that does not run SEO will ship a site that looks finished. We would rather build the redirect map and the templates together, in-house in Melbourne — never an offshore handoff with a local phone number on the invoice.
Initial SEO (titles, structure, Search Console, images, a stack that can rank) sits in our business and ecommerce floors. Ongoing SEO is a retainer, typically $1,500–$5,000+ per month. We do not guarantee #1.
What a redesign costs in Melbourne in 2026
Do not compare a builder template to a CBD brochure. We publish floors so the quote has a floor:
- Landing pages from $1,100 — one offer, forms, analytics, domain and hosting setup.
- Business WordPress from $3,300 — customised theme, Search Console, initial SEO, optimised images, CDN.
- Ecommerce from $7,000 — Shopify or WooCommerce, payments, inventory, Merchant Center, channels.
GST in Australia is 10%. The floors are not labelled inclusive or exclusive; the quote will say which. If exclusive, GST-inclusive equivalents are $1,210 / $3,630 / $7,700. “From” is a floor, not a ceiling. A five-page service site and a wholesale catalogue are not the same rebuild.
The full inclusions, year-1 hosting and what is not in the floor are in How much does a website cost in Melbourne in 2026?. Read that before you collect three unexplained quotes.
A refresh that keeps WordPress and the URL map may sit near the business floor. Leaving a builder, or replacing an abandoned Woo theme, is a rebuild — budget like a new site, plus redirects and content. A $1,500–$5,000+/month SEO retainer on a site that cannot pass INP is how you fund bounce.
Leaving Wix or Squarespace
We do not build on Wix or Squarespace. We will not take a monthly fee to postpone the move. Those tools are fine for testing an idea. They are a poor CMS for technical SEO, a poor place to hang Ads landers or a wholesale price list, and a migration project when you outgrow them.
Leaving a builder is not a theme swap. You export what content you can, rebuild on WordPress or Shopify, map every public URL to a 301, reconnect the domain, and put Search Console and GA4 on a stack you actually own. Paying a Melbourne agency to “customise” Wix is how you fund that rebuild twice.
If you are on a builder today, skip the patch column. You are in the rebuild column. We will tell you WordPress or Shopify; we will not install both “to be safe.”
FAQ
How do I know if my website needs a redesign?
If INP or mobile is failing, you cannot edit the CMS, you are on Wix or Squarespace, the sitemap describes a previous company, or you have traffic (or ad spend) and no enquiries — you are past a patch. One of those, and a sound WordPress or Shopify install, can still be a refresh. Two or more rebuild rows in the table above, and you should stop paying for plugins.
Will a website redesign hurt my SEO?
It can, if URLs 404, titles vanish, or nobody owns Search Console. It should not, if we inventory URLs, 301 everything that matters, and launch with GSC and a sitemap in your account. Volatility happens; a silent 404 farm is a choice. We still do not guarantee #1.
How much does a website redesign cost in Melbourne?
Use the published floors: from $1,100 / $3,300 / $7,000 for landing, business WordPress, and ecommerce. A redesign of a live business site usually starts at the business or ecommerce floor, plus redirects and content. GST is 10%. See the cost guide rather than a $5,000–$50,000 shrug.
Can you redesign my Wix or Squarespace site?
We can replace it with custom WordPress or Shopify. We do not redesign on those platforms. The job is a rebuild with a 301 map.
Is a redesign the same as WordPress maintenance?
No. Maintenance (typical Melbourne market often $50–$300/month) keeps a sound site updated and backed up. A redesign changes templates or the CMS. If the theme is the problem, more care will not fix INP.
Do you work offshore?
No. In-house from Docklands. Same people on the templates and the SEO. Twenty years on this stack.
Should I start SEO the day the new site launches?
Initial SEO is in the business and ecommerce floors. If you need to rank, budget a retainer in the $1,500–$5,000+ range we publish. Do not buy content for a site that still fails INP.
Get a quote and a technical review
If you want a number that matches a sitemap — and a yes/no on patch versus rebuild — talk to us. Ask for a quote and a technical review: INP and mobile on the URLs that matter, whether the CMS is maintainable, and what a 301 map would look like.
Call 03 9067 5679 or 1300 322 971. Tell us landing, business, ecommerce, or “we’re on Wix.” We will tell you which floor you are on, what GST looks like on the quote, and whether you should stop patching.
