WordPress maintenance in Melbourne in 2026 is a monthly job, not a US “care plan” ladder and not a line you can skip because the site looked finished at launch. Typical Melbourne market for WordPress maintenance is often $50–$300 per month. That band is the market — updates, backups, uptime and security done for you — not a Design Box silver/gold/platinum menu. We have not published a care-plan price list, so we will not invent one here.

Hosting is a separate bill. Our published Australian cPanel hosting is $20 / $44 / $60 / $184 per month. LiteSpeed is on every plan. JetBackup is not on Economy. We can take the site onto that hosting even if we did not build it.

If the stack is already rotten — a builder theme, a Woo store that janks on “Add to cart”, or a site Google will not rank — more maintenance will not save it. That is a rebuild, not a retainer.

TL;DR

  • Typical Melbourne market (not our unpublished menu): WordPress maintenance often $50–$300/month. Brochure at the low end; lead-gen mid to top; WooCommerce heavier because checkout has to be tested.
  • Must include: core, theme and plugin updates; off-site backups you can restore; uptime alerts; malware scanning and a cleanup path; staging before production.
  • Hosting is not maintenance. Published cPanel: Economy $20, Premium $44, Performance $60, Deluxe $184 per month. Australian data centre. LiteSpeed on all plans. JetBackup from Premium up. Disk 15 / 75 / 125 / 200 GB.
  • We take over hosting and care on sites we did not build. In-house, Docklands — never offshore.
  • Core Web Vitals and INP belong in the work. Updating plugins on a slow host is not performance.
  • DIY if you will test on staging. Freelancers until they are on leave. An agency when the site takes leads or orders.
  • When the theme, builder or Woo stack is the problem, stop patching. WordPress floors: landing from $1,100, business from $3,300, ecommerce from $7,000. We refuse Wix and Squarespace. SEO retainers are a different budget: typically $1,500–$5,000+/month. No #1 guarantee.

What WordPress maintenance must include

A care arrangement that only “updates plugins” is a script, not a service. For a Melbourne business site the minimum is the application layer and a way to recover when an update breaks Friday afternoon.

Updates. WordPress core, the theme, and every plugin. WooCommerce, forms, SEO plugins and page builders are where conflicts hide. Untested production updates are how checkout and contact forms die quietly. A brochure site can live on a monthly cycle; a store taking orders should not wait a month to patch a payment plugin.

Backups. Off-site, automatic, and restore-tested. A backup that has never been restored is a file, not a plan. On our cPanel stack, JetBackup is included from Premium ($44) up — not on Economy ($20). If you are on Economy, do not treat the host as disaster recovery.

Uptime. Someone has to notice the site is down before your customers do. An alert that reaches a human in Australian hours is the point. The server can be fine while a plugin white-screens WordPress.

Malware and access. Scanning, a hardening baseline (sensible logins, SSL, limited admin users), and a cleanup path quoted as included or extra — not discovered during an incident. WordPress is a common target because it is a common CMS. That is a reason to patch, not a reason to panic.

Staging. Copy of the site, updates there first, then production. For WooCommerce that means cart, checkout, payments and emails. For lead-gen, forms still deliver and GA4 still fires. If a provider cannot show you staging, they are updating live and hoping.

What this is not: a redesign, a new feature, a copywriting programme, or an SEO retainer. Those are scoped. Maintenance keeps the software you already paid for from rotting. Technical SEO and INP work can sit alongside it; they are not the same invoice as “we patched PHP”.

Melbourne 2026 price bands by site type

AUD, which is how WordPress maintenance cost in Australia should be quoted. GST is 10%; confirm exclusive vs inclusive on any quote. These are typical Melbourne market bands, not a Design Box care-plan SKU. We quote the stack in front of us.

Site type Typical market (AUD / month) What you are actually buying
Brochure WordPress Low end of $50–$300, often $50–$150 Few plugins, low change, monthly updates, backups, basic security and uptime.
Lead-gen / enquiry site Mid to top of $50–$300 Forms, tracking, more plugins, staging, a check that enquiries still arrive after updates.
WooCommerce Top of $50–$300, or quoted above it Checkout QA, payment and shipping plugins, inventory, emails. A failed update is lost orders.
Hosting (our published cPanel) $20 / $44 / $60 / $184 Australian-hosted server. Not a substitute for the rows above.

A five-page plumber’s site and a Woo catalogue are not the same job. If a quote sits under the band, ask what is missing: staging, restore tests, malware cleanup, or Woo QA. If it sits well above, you should be buying developer time or performance work — not a relabelled plugin script.

Do not bundle this with SEO. Rankings are a campaign. Our published SEO retainers typically sit at $1,500–$5,000+ per month. Putting that money on a site that is down, hacked or slow on mobile is how you fund bounce.

Illustrative year-1 (not a quote): a business WordPress site at the $3,300 floor, Premium hosting at $44/month ($528/year), a domain, and modest care in the $50–$150/month market band is roughly $4,400–$5,700 before GST and before SEO or Ads. Woo year-1 adds plugin licences, gateway fees and a heavier care job. The build invoice is not the bill.

Hosting in Australia vs cheap overseas

This is the part US round-ups skip, and it is the part Melbourne sites feel.

Your visitors are here. A server in another country adds latency you then try to paper over with a CDN. Australian hosting will not magically pass Core Web Vitals, but it removes a stupid delay before LCP and INP are even in play. Support that answers in Australian business hours is not a lifestyle perk when checkout breaks at 9am.

Cheap overseas shared hosting is cheap because you share a noisy box, you wait on a ticket queue in another timezone, and backups — if they exist — live on the same account you are trying to restore. “Unlimited” disk on a $5 plan is marketing. Our published limits are honest: 15 / 75 / 125 / 200 GB SSD.

We host on Australian infrastructure. Published cPanel:

Plan Per month Disk Monthly data LiteSpeed JetBackup Performance
Economy $20 15 GB 25 GB Yes No
Premium $44 75 GB 200 GB Yes Yes
Performance $60 125 GB Unlimited Yes Yes
Deluxe $184 200 GB Unlimited Yes Yes

LiteSpeed is on every plan because WordPress is PHP, and a cache that understands WordPress beats a generic Apache default. Economy is a real plan for a small brochure; it is the wrong plan if the host is your only backup. Premium is the floor we would rather see on a live lead-gen site. Performance and Deluxe exist for stores and heavier traffic — 2× and 4× on the published table, not a vibe.

We can take over hosting even if we did not build the site. Move DNS, files and the database, issue SSL, put WordPress on LiteSpeed, turn on JetBackup (Premium and up), and start maintaining a stack we can see. You should own the domain, WordPress admin, Search Console and GA4. If a previous developer still holds those, that is the first job — not a redesign.

Hosting setup is in our web design packages; the monthly server bill is not. We do not lock files so you cannot leave.

DIY vs freelancer vs agency

Infographic of who maintains WordPress: DIY (you test on staging), freelancer (direct access, coverage risk), and agency (process, QA, someone else on the roster). Hosting is a separate bill.

DIY if you will actually do it: staging, updates, a restore test, form or checkout checks, and a calendar that survives January. The cost is not $0 — it is your time, and the incident you handle yourself.

A freelancer fits a simple brochure with a small budget and a person you can reach. Direct access is the strength. Coverage is the weakness: leave, a bigger client, or malware that is not a CSS tweak.

An agency is for sites that take leads or orders, or for one team on hosting, WordPress and the marketing on top. You are paying for process — staging, QA, someone else on the roster — not a logo. We are in-house from Docklands, never offshore hours with a Melbourne phone number. Twenty years on WordPress. If we take the hosting, we can see the box.

Managed WordPress hosting (the host runs some updates) is still not a care plan. It will not QA checkout, rewrite a bad theme, or fix INP on page-builder soup.

Ask every provider the same things. Who owns the hosting account and the backups? Is the data centre in Australia? Staging first? Malware cleanup included? Who tests forms or checkout after a plugin update? Who watches INP, not just “the site loaded”? Vague answers mean the cheap month is incomplete.

When maintenance is not enough

Maintenance assumes the site is worth keeping. It is not enough when the theme fails INP on mobile, when you are on Wix or Squarespace (leaving those platforms is a rebuild, which is why we refuse them), or when WooCommerce has been patched around a slow host and a junk plugin list until Ads are expensive and bounce is the business model.

NC Fitness Gear came to us with a slow WooCommerce store, high bounce and expensive ads. After technical SEO and Ads work, bounce moved from over 50% to under 3%. That was not a plugin-update retainer. The store had to be fast enough to keep. Maintenance after that kind of work protects the gain; it does not create it.

If you are still on a $500 template, or a site another studio built that cannot take technical SEO, stop arguing about $80 versus $200 a month. Read how much a website costs in Melbourne in 2026 and budget the floor: landing from $1,100, business WordPress from $3,300, ecommerce from $7,000. GST is 10%; the quote will say exclusive or inclusive. “From” is a floor, not a ceiling. A rebuild we host in Australia is cheaper over a year than twelve more months of patching a site Google and your customers have already left.

FAQ

How much does WordPress maintenance cost in Melbourne in 2026?

Typical market: often $50–$300 per month, depending on brochure vs lead-gen vs WooCommerce. That is not a Design Box care-plan menu — we have not published one, so we quote the work. Hosting is extra; our published cPanel is $20 / $44 / $60 / $184 per month.

What should be included?

Core, theme and plugin updates; off-site backups with a restore path; uptime monitoring; malware scanning and a stated cleanup path; staging before production. Woo needs checkout tested. Lead-gen needs forms and tracking tested. INP should be watched, not assumed.

Is hosting the same as maintenance?

No. Hosting is the server. Maintenance is the WordPress application on it. You can buy both from us; they are still two lines. Economy at $20/month does not include JetBackup.

Can you take over a WordPress site you did not build?

Yes. We need admin access, domain control at the registrar (in your name), and an honest look at plugins, PHP and the theme. Some sites are maintainable as-is. Some need a rebuild before a retainer is honest.

Do I need hosting in Australia?

If your customers are here, Australian hosting is the default we recommend. Latency, privacy expectations and support in local hours all matter. A bargain US host is a common reason a “finished” WordPress site still fails LCP on a phone.

Do you maintain Wix or Squarespace?

No. Custom WordPress and Shopify only. We will not take a monthly fee to postpone a rebuild.

Is SEO included in maintenance?

No. Initial SEO is in our business and ecommerce build floors. Ongoing rankings are a retainer, typically $1,500–$5,000+ per month. We do not guarantee #1.

When should I rebuild instead of maintaining?

When the theme, host or platform cannot pass Core Web Vitals, take Ads, or take a technical SEO programme. When you are on a builder. When Woo bounce is the ads problem, not a missing plugin patch. Use the website cost floors, not a cheaper month of care.

Take over hosting, or audit the stack

If the site is ours, we already know the box. If it is not, we can still move it onto Australian cPanel, put LiteSpeed in front of WordPress, and quote care against what is actually installed — not against a downloaded US package.

Call 03 9067 5679 or 1300 322 971. Ask for a hosting takeover, a maintenance quote, or a technical SEO audit (our SEO audit is normally $3,300 inc GST when you are buying the work). Tell us brochure, lead-gen or Woo. We will tell you whether the site is maintainable, whether Economy is a false economy, and whether you should stop patching and rebuild.

Design Box Digital, Level 10, 611 Flinders Street, Docklands. In-house. Australian hosting. WordPress we will still answer the phone for.
